Marine protected areas are vital to maintaining the health of marine life along our coast. According the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, these areas focus on protecting the diversity and abundance of marine life, the habitats they depend on, and the integrity of marine ecosystems. In addition, they help improve responsible recreational, educational, and study opportunities of marine life.
- There are 5 different MPA regions in California: Northern CA, North Central CA, San Francisco Bay, Central CA, Southern CA
- The MPA network has 124 protected areas that cover 16% of state waters
